Creative Energy

My creative energy was at a standstill for awhile. Since October maybe. The last layouts I created were with the KI Memories Halloween papers. Then I moved onto mini-albums for ebay, and then I stopped completely. I love making the mini-albums so I don't know what happened there. I guess I just got too busy, or too stressed or maybe a combination of both.

Then came the holidays. More stuff to do and less time for scrapping maybe. BUT, I always "make" stuff for Christmas. No matter if I say I'm not going to or plan on it, I ALWAYS end up making something. So, I've been *thinking* about getting back into my room. Today, I FINALLY did it. And I've got to say it felt darn good. :)

I altered a flower for a bow holder for my niece for Christmas, or AM altering. It's not quite finished. I've started two ornaments. I'm working on a calendar for my mom. I think the flow is returning. Best of all, I'm finally using all those RF stamps I bought ages ago. :)

O Christmas Tree

Growing up in the Great White North we had a real Christmas tree . . . for awhile anyway. I wish I had the pictures to support the story, but alas I do not.

Every December we would venture out to my Grandpa's house, way out in the middle of nowhere where he owned some obscene amount of acreage. We'd drive out and find ourselves a "great" tree. Indeed, some of those trees probably were great. Ironically though, perfection is not the theme of this story and perfection is NOT what I remember or what has been passed on through the great tale of Christmas trees in our family.

When I was about 4 or 5 my dad took me with him out to the woods to find the tree. I guess my mom and brother must have stayed back, been sick, etc. My dad wasn't usually the doting father and for the most part I was not a daddy's girl, but the year I was five, my dad and I were close because he was laid off from his job and spent the afternoons with me after I got home from kindergarten. So, that year when we went into the woods together he let ME choose the family Christmas tree. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? Well, if you are a parent you know that any Christmas tree is beautiful to a small child and trees with snow on them are even more beautiful. I chose THE tree, a tree that was "perfect" in my little childhood eyes. My mom . . . she did not see the perfection that I saw in that little tree, so in our small family circle it became known as "The Charlie Brown Tree."

The following year it was my brother's turn to choose the ole' tanenbaum. He was 6.5 years older than me and certainly a 12 year old could choose a better tree than a 5 year old right? One might think that. Mark went out, maybe even by himself, across the road from our house, and back he came with a sled full of pine boughs sticking out. It's the kind of tree that I'm shocked my dad could even get through the door. It was ROTUND to say the least. In fact, I think the tree my brother chose might be better described as a bush. The star on the top was so buried in the branches you could barely see it. And so it was affectionatley called the "bush tree."

THAT was the last year of my childhood that we had a real Christmas tree. From the next year on we had an artificial tree. That was fine, and it was more "perfect" in the traditional Christmas tree sense. So, while we all try so hard to achieve perfection during the holidays, perfection doesn't always make for the best, family stories.

Warmth

I do not LOVE winter per se, but I love so much of what winter brings. Christmas for one, what's not to love about great food, family, classic television shows and more. More so though. I love the warmth of winter. I know, I know. I live in Michigan. There IS no warmth in Michigan in the winter as evidenced by the last three days when the highest the mercury has reached is a balmy 16 degrees. Hardly Pina Colada weather. But winter brings warm things. Comfy things. It's those things that I love. Flannel and fleece jammies, flannel sheets, quilts, down comforters, slipper socks and crocheted blankies. They make me so warm and comfortable that I think I could sleep the whole day away wrapped up in their warmth. Then there's the actual heat. I've always been a heat monger, in the winter anyway.

In my childhood home there were these big wall-mounted heat registers. We burned wood but the house was old so it wasn't exactly the most air tight. So, when I'd get cold in my upstairs bedroom I'd sneak downstairs, grab the blankets off the couch/recliners, take a pillow off the couch and lay on the living room floor right in front of that register. In fact, I'd make myself a blanket tent and all the hot air from the furnace would get trapped right under my blankets and I'd sleep soundly. In the mornings, we'd battle for the kitchen register since it blew out the warmest heat. Had the kitchen been carpeted I would have, of course, chose THAT register to sleep by instead. Of course, my jammies of choice back then - footie jammies. In fact, I loved footy jammies so much that I wore them long past the time any single person should wear footy jammies. But, I AM only 5'0" and I was in college before I could get the scale to tip past 100 so finding footy jammies at 12 wasn't that difficult. ;) There's an embarrassing little secret. Alright, I don't know if I WAS 12, but I know for sure that I still wore footy jammies in 6th grade. HA!

When we moved into this home almost three years ago I was kind of excited that there was a free standing furnace in the kitchen. Okay, so it WOULD have been better if the furnace was in the living room where I could curl up on the carpet, but I still so LOVE coming downstairs on a cold winter morning and standing next to the heater. It's also a favorite place after work or any night I have trouble sleeping. I'm not sure if it's the warmth that makes me tired standing next to it or the fond memories of lapping up the heat in front of the old register at my parents that makes me drift off.

Winter does equal warmth in so many ways. As I sit here draped in fleece from neck to toe wrapped in a blanket watching the flames flicker in the kitchen, it's hard to imagine that there could be any season better than winter. Remind me of that in February, okay. ;)

One step ahead

The fact of the matter is that I tend to be a procrastinator. It's just one of those things that's part of my personality. It is ironic to the core that I ended up teaching middle school, i.e. procrastinator central, although many of them do not know the meaning of the word. I try very hard to enrich their vocabularies knowing full well that many of them do not hear words much beyond the 4 letter variety.

My fab. teaching partner, she and I are like two peas in a pod when it comes to lots of things - especially organization and procrastination. Every year, at least 4 times a year we make new resolutions about those two topics - once at the beginning of the school year, once at New Years, again a few weeks later at the end of the sememster, and yet again at the end of the school year when we announce that NEXT year we will be so much more organized and on top of things. And so goes the circle of life. But, I have to admit . . . I *think* that I am finally getting somewhere.

Now, it's been a long road - this IS afterall my seventh year of teaching. SEVENTH. Wow! Unbelievable. But there are some things that have worked - binders; binders are my friends. I've abandon the file cabinet concept for binders. Each unit, each chapter, each book gets its own binder. This is the first year I've done that and so far it's working smashingly. Now, putting things back IN the binder once I'm finished. . . Well, I always say that's what Friday after school is for - to re-file all of the lessons, worksheets from the week, but the raw truth is that by Friday at 3:00 I'm ready for my weekend to start. So, that leaves me with two VERY stacked paper files - one for English and one for social studies. If it doesn't get done before break then I guess that will be a project for the end of the semester.

Planning ahead is also good too; I've been mucho better about turning away from the computer by 7:50 every morning and actually using my planning time to, well, plan. Currently we are reading a book and all of the chapter questions/assignments are copied and available for those students who read faster than others. Two headaches killed there - work for me done and work for them to keep them ontask. FABULOUS! So, I'm planned up until Christmas break which begins December 21st. In English anyway, I plan to finish my planning tomorrow during planning time. ;) Say that 10 times fast. Afterall, something had to be sacrificed in order for me to get my progress reports done. They're due tomorrow which means that I'd usually give them out the following Monday. *blush* BUT, not this time, oh no . . . I got them all printed today (along with my social studies test for Monday) and even included REMINDERS about the upcoming semester reading projects that will be due. REMINDERS! Wowee! Actually, I just learned how to add notes so that's really only spectacularly exciting to me because it's a novelty. By next marking period I'm sure it won't be so cool.

So that's where I am . . . one step ahead! Works for other things too. Christmas. I am SO ontop of Christmas this year it slays me. Cards? Addressed and ready to be sent out (but I decided to use my new AL stamps on the envies before they go out). Presents? All purchased and under the tree. Stockings? Gifts - check; Candy - check. Goodies? Well, hubby's a chocoholic with a big ole' sweet tooth so no goody making has begun yet, BUT all of the ingredients are purchased and recipes chosen. Handmade gifts? Okay, you got me there. That's what I'm planning on doing this weekend. I have a gift for my niece to work on and a calendar for my mom that I'm making. After the one manic Christmas I've gone light on the gift MAKING. Still have to figure out something for grams too.

Right now life is good. Being ahead feels good. Knowing what to expect on a day to day basis, at home and work, is good. Schedules are good although adjustment takes time. I'm working on me and that's good. Time off, away from places/things/people is all good. Sometimes I feel slightly guilty that I'm not scrapping but the truth is there is NO need to feel that way. It's a hobby and if I don't feel like doing it, oh well. As it turns out, the world does continue to rotate even when I don't scrap. ;) Who knew? I know this down time is just another cycle and soon I'll be motivated to scrap again. Afterall, I DO have a lengthy break coming up Dec. 21st through Jan. 2. I'll need SOMETHING to do, right? Alright, all this being so fantastically on top of things is exhausting and I am taking advantage of no Grey's tonight to curl up under my flannel sheets and down comforter for a long winter's nap. Be merry!

Do something Christmas-y every Day of December

Okay, so I admit, I cannot get into the photo a day, but it IS my intention to do something Holiday-ish every day of December. :)

Dec 1 - uploaded Christmas card photos and ordered pics for my gift calendar
Dec 2 - worked on the aforementioned Christmas calendar
Dec 3 - finished my Christmas shopping, wrapped presents & bought ingredients for goodies
Dec 4 - made first batch of holiday Chex mix.
Dec 5 - addressed my Christmas cards
Dec 6 - still need to do my Holiday duty today; it'll probably be finishing up 2 gifts and 2 ornaments

In other news . . .
I need to find myself some scrappin' motivation! The best thing would be a DT gig. When I have a gig then I find myself inspired to get my assignments done and then the inspiration flows. I haven't done much of any scrapping now since mid October. I've got some sketches and I've been going through photos but I just can't find any mojo to actually CREATE a page. BAH!

E's new job is going well. Xander is only in daycare 2 days a week which has worked out very well. E's gone T, W, F, S & Su nights so if X was in daycare they'd never get any time together. Now X goes to daycare M & F and stays home with E during the day. Daycare costs are down and he's making the same amount as he was subbing so things are good.

It's been an adjustment for all of us, but we are making it work. I think the adjustment is part of what's sucking my creative juices. Things are just SO busy right now.

Holiday Photo

We had holiday photo shoot one early this year. :) It's my absolute favorite of all the Christmas photos I've taken. I guess the trick for me is to take OUTDOOR photos. I do lots better with outdoor lighting.

Welcome the end of 2006

Decmber 1st, REALLY?

I've got to admit the months have flown. :) Scrapping has been at a standstill, but I'm feeling like I might try to get back on that horse tonight and this weekend. I've been applying for a few design teams, but haven't made any . . . yet. I know my time is coming.

One Page at a Time gave me an Honorable Mention, but I was so impressed with the quantity of stuff in their Kit plus add-ons that I went ahead and subscribed. :) I've got a few other things I'm working on and hopefully I'll soon know if those will be fruitful endeavors. I worked on the header for my resume last night. I subscribed back in September but haven't gotten around to it until now.

We had quite the storm today snow wise. We promised the Xan-man that we'll go out to play in it tomorrow which is good since I could use some new snow pics for the calendar I'm making my mom for Christmas. Anyhow, we got to come home early. That's a great way to start the weekend.

Thankful

I've been MIA here for awhile. Lots going on, many adjustments to be made. I'm spending a lot more time back at my "journaling roots" at a more private site. It feels more supportive and is great to be posting there again.

We had a nice Thanksgiving although my kitty is very ill and has been at the Animal Hospital since Friday. We hope to pick him up tomorrow. Here were my 29 things I was thankful for this year:

In honor of this my 29th Thanksgiving, here are 29 things I am thankful for today:

TODAY

is going to be a day or unbridled productivity. Yes!? That is my hope anyway. Of course, it is nearly 10:00 and I am still in my jammies, on the computer, sans coffee. DH is in the shower now, I'll get in and get moving as soon as he's done.

Scrapbooking Related TO DOS:
- I have LO ideas sketched for both the BH June sketch and the Rain Showers calls. I need to get those started/finished
- I have a drawer FULL of albums to get listed on ebay. I've set a goal for myself of $300 by the end of December. Yesterday I finished 2 albums; 2 2-page spreads; and did the insides for 3 other albums. :) FUN stuff! I have some paper pieced turkeys left too so I may try to crank out a Thanksgiving album this afternoon.
- Resume! I bought it several months ago and haven't gotten it moving yet.
- CLEAN up MESS.

Christmas TO DOS:
- Finalize budget for gifts and food
- Dig out Santa hat for possible Xander/Christmas photo outside in the snow today: It's warm but the snow is still stuck on the trees due to the ice storm the other day
- Wrap presents and write down what I DO HAVE. My mind can't seem to wrap itself around what's finished.
- Photograph Flying Scotsman to resell on ebay (since I won 2 of them)
- Make goodie list
- Make Thanksgiving menu (just the three of us so it shouldn't be too hard)
- Priortitize the monstrous list of things I still want to buy for Xander

Home TO DOS:
- Grocery shopping
- Put laundry away
- Start dinner
- Bills
- Balance checking
- Budget

I'm sure there is a LOT more, but that's definitely a big enough list for now!

TADA!

I decided rather than to stop blogging, I'd give myself a fresh start. Viola! Pink and a self-made banner. ;)
